CL14 Rolan Vega - Documentary CD

AND FORTHCOMING THIS FALL!

CL16 Units History of the Units CD
ComLib presents the first ever legit reissue of the Units. This genre-defying band, from San Francisco's barely-documented synth/punk/art underground of the late 70s/early 80s, combined sarcastic humor with deadly serious cultural critique, and synthetic experimentation with the bombast of punk. MAY 7, 2007

So the new address I posted last Friday was (embarassingly) incorrect. It has been corrected. If you sent a demo or other
mail to ComLib in the last 4 days, I apologize for any inconvenience.

MAY 4, 2007

Please note new address. New, new address effective May 4.
However, if you mailed something to us at the NW 21st
address, it will get forwarded probably without any problems.

THANKS TEXTURA
The excellent Textura online music magazine (one of the finest) features ComLib throughout its May issue. Read a label
profile interview with ComLib chiefs Dickow and Chandler, read a track-by-track introspective by Jefrey Leighton Brown on
his new CD Change Has Got to Come!, and reviews of recent releases by Reanimator, Project Perfect, and Christmas
Decorations! Thank you Textura!

REPEAT AFTER ME
ComLib Vice Prez DJ Brokenwindow is a contributor to Repeat After Me, the newest piece from Portland
experimental theatre company Hand2Mouth Theatre. B-Window is not only the DJ/MC and music editor for the show, but
also crosses over as cast member.
Spearheading the city's avant-theatre spring season, Repeat is a surreal exploration
of the main stream of American culture, an exploration of the motives, nostalgia, and obsessions that drive American
patriotic culture and its songs. Both disturbing and insightful, Repeat has been a critical success locally and will appear in
Seattle's On The Boards season, after making an official premiere at PICA's 2007 TBA Festival.

STRATEGY SITE, NEW CD ON KRANKY PLUS 12" SINGLE, AND KUDOS
Strategy's Future Rock CD comes out in May on kranky! Accolades are piling up everywhere including at The Wire! A 12"

RELEASES YOU CAN LISTEN TO, BUT NOT SEE NOR TOUCH NOR FILE ON A SHELF
Community Library gingerly steps into the 2000's with the introduction of mp3 versions of all our releases. In April, our entire
catalogue will be available to the public as downloadables, thanks to warm folks over at Boomkat. Obtain as well a label
sampler that includes exclusive Strategy and Solenoid material, or collect all your favorite releases in this ephemeral, indeed,
vapourous format! Inkeeping with our efforts to use only the best available materials, ComLib mp3s are fabricated using the best
data currently available. Later this spring our titles will be available in Japan courtesy of the excellent Warszawa shop,
and more outlets will follow after that. Step into the 2000s with ComLib mp3's!

CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT
Jefrey
Leighton Brown's debut solo album, Change Has Got to Come! was released on 3/16/07 to much praise. Actually recorded
before Evolutionary Jass Band's Change of Scene CD, Brown's debut gives us special insight into the EJB's past and future
directions. Killer redefined underground soul-jazz for right now. The EJB's next album, This Is What Is Happening Today, is will
be released this fall on Community Library, and the band are releasing a super-limited vinyl-only LP of dirges on excellent
Portland label, Mississippi Records.

STILL NEW AND EXCITING...
Also still hot off the presses are our new CD's by Project Perfect, PM+, and Christmas Decorations, Communal Rust!
Both of these groundbreaking albums are garnering some nice press kudos and attention from fans new and old...

AND FORTHCOMING THIS SPRING!

CL14 Rolan Vega - Documentary CD
Vega's fantastic debut CD collects years' worth of synthesizer music, reminiscent of "library music," and documentary soundtracks, rendered in a beautifully rough and hazy DIY home-recording palette. An up-and-comer of Chicago's analogue-synth music underground...

CL13 Christmas Decorations- Communal Rust CD

New Residencies for ComLib Artists & DJ's
2007 kicks off with several new recurring events for Community Library artists and dee jays. The Evolutionary Jass Band
are kicking off their new monthly residency at Valentine's, one of downtown Portland's most experimental music-friendly
night spots (good wine and sandwiches too). Jefrey and Michael kick it off this month in duo formation while the full band
is on break until March.

Strategy hasn't played as a weekly resident DJ anywhere for quite a while, so it's with some surprise and pride to announce
Strategy's Weekly starting at venerable venue Saucebox downtown. This is a swankier venue that happens to have great
DJ's week-round including the long-running Techno Sol and All Things Considered weeklies. Strategy's will be Tuesday nights
starting February 6.

Don't forget to check out these other recurring events by ComLib folks:
Evolutionary Jass Band - First Saturdays at L'Astra (Portland)

October 4, 2006

OK Folks: So some new content in this month's site update is still in progress- mainly artist pages
and catalogue entries which have blurbs pending. In the meantime we're just going to start posting
some updates...

Skacid
The tracklist is now available for this DJ set, here.

Eats Tapes Podcasts
Eats Tapes had a super kick-ass tour down the Eats Coats of the U.S. They are now reinstalled in California.
Thanks to everyone who came to rock with them and especially people who helped or attempted to help
set up last-minute shows. The band have a tour-diary-in-the-form-of-podcast available at www.eatstapes.com!

Yarnlazer
Honey Owens from nudge has started a super good CDR imprint, Yarnlazer. Her current solo release under

FIASCO-TRONIX
Fiasco, DJ Brokenwindow's ongoing residency at Ground Kontrol classic video arcade (an epicenter of local
electronics culture) is still going strong- October 12th will feature longtime label supporters E*Rock and
Philip Sherburne
! Fiasco features DJs and musicians on hardware electronics swapping places and playing
together. The night features clever hand-illustrated (and often 3-D) flyers by B-window himself...examples
below. If you are a Portland ComLib fan please drop in to Fiasco. We know you love Galaga and Burgertime,
too.

Chris Herbert Debut on kranky
Community Library comrade Chris Herbert, of Birmingham, England, has his debut CD, Mezzotint, out this month
on kranky, home of Strategy, nudge, and many friends. Chris has been part of the ComLib mission for some time,
being a tape-trading, genre-mashing partner abroad and great longtime friend for 12+ years. We are incredibly proud
to see his first album earning such accolades, and encourage you to check out the release...more info at kranky

New DJ Set Now Posted
DJ P.Disco's "ComLib in Context" series of DJ sets puts songs from each ComLib release in context with
similar music. The new set "Analogue Hinterlands" finds two tracks from the new Reanimator 12" EP
alongside other examples of dubby, ruff-hewn, DIY drum machine and tape music. Taking us on a journey
from Tony Conrad's 1967 oscillator experiments to Chicago ghetto house classics, to 8-bit loop records,
and more! Done completely with vinyl in one take- only one egregious mixing flub! Get the set.

Sawako- Live's and Videos
She's barely set foot back on the East Coast after sunning out in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but
Sawako is already preparing to play New York's coolest events this autumn- about six shows in 8 days!
We are so sorry we can't be there for these: CONFLUX is a festival of psychogeography. Unity Gain is
happening in Spiegeltent, a mobile venue that travels from location to location. And her gig at Monkeytown
involves a 4 video screens and 6.1 surround sound PA. Do events this cool happen anywhere other than New York?!?
Details and Links
. And, you can now check out some of her live's and audio/visual pieces at her YouTube location.

Cascadian Knights Returneth
We've received a message from 2032: The Cascadian Ministry of Culture
is sending two Cascadian Knights to 2006 for further revolutionary teachings and historical
accounts (in song) of the coming war of secession. At Phonique's monthly at Noir, September 9,
2006. They were captured on film in May, proving their strange appearances throughout the region
are not just music-scene hearsay. Since 2003, there have been over 5 occurrences of Knight
performances, in which they attempt to teach future residents of the Cascadian Republic of their
forthcoming destiny as freedom fighters against imperialism.

Evolutionary Jass Band live at Halleluwah
Alongside comrades, like-minded artists, and some other Library associates, The Evolutionary Jass
Band
are going to play at the first ever Halleluwah Festival, co-curated by Yeti Magazine and Blackbird
Presents
. The proximity, timewise, of Seattle's Decibel Festival, with this event, really makes Cascadia
the place to be this September. They really lit the stage on fire at the recent 2006 PDX Pop Now! Festival,
so chances are they'll really be bringing it for this one as well. Some amazing photos of the show will appear
in this space soon. And, catch them at a few live dates before that as well.

Tape/Mutant Pop Blog
We recently connected with some enterprising and like-minded DJ's from Bristol (a city strangely like
Portland, although with much older buildings and considerably more English) and you can find some nice
reviews of CL6, Solenoid's out-of-print "Night Beach" single, on their recent post, as well as a promo mp3
from Solenoid's new masterpiece LP/CD on ORAC. They feature regular and astute reviews of new tunes
with a super broad stylistic vision, in fact it might be this tendency towards absurdist diversity-ism that
puts the Mutant Popsters in the ComLib orbit...some common ground there. Recommended: excellent
downloads of quality DJ mix mp3s that cut across the techno, disco, italo, and house spectra.

CL12 Zulu & DJ C "Animal Attraction" 7"
Welcome back, 7"s. It's been called a dead format, with some prominent US labels and distros
dropping them entirely. We say, turn back the clock...get small. We rely on this handy format for
everything--from classic and modern reggae and dancehall, to cutting edge sound-art singles from the
likes of Joe Colley or Tonschacht label, to portable 80s and 70s hits from the dollar bin. Some of our
favorite modern labels, like Burial Mix, Type, Tomlab, audraglint, and many more have weighed in with
killer new music on 7"s. We are proud to contribute to this format renewal project with a series of
unpackaged and crowd-pleasing (but still experimental) 7"s, starting with a collaboration between DJ C
of Boston and Zulu of Panama/Chicago...!

Out Soon!!
CL9 Reanimator Special Powers CD
CL10 Jefrey Leighton Brown Change Has Got To Come! CD
CL11 Project Perfect PM+ CD

More Live's: Eats Tapes- Eats Coats Tour!
Eats Tapes are touring the Eats Coats in August. These guys are fantastic live so if you love them and you
love techno and you love ComLib, then you should go! They still have a couple/few open dates, so if any-
one wants to throw a show for the bands, that would be awesome. Catch them in NYC at the great, long-
running Bunker night, in Providence with the amazing Lucky Dragons, in Boston at DJ C's Beat Research
club night, and more. Schedule.

July 3, 2006

Cascadian Dependence Day
Most consider July 4 to be a cause for celebration- independence day for the United States. In the
light of world events of the last 5 years (not to mention the 200+ preceding) there's not much honor
worth celebrating, and so American Independence day becomes a day to lament Cascadia being
under the thumb of imperialist American rule. Visit this Wikipedia node to learn about the Cascadian
separatist movement, with good links to other secession movements.

Change of Address
A minor change of address has occurred: go here to get the info.

Welcome to Summertime
With recent job and schedule changes, and new performances ramping up for summer,
we have been slow to update the site recently. However, we're back on track with
exciting news, announcements, downloads, and releases...(nudge concert photo on the splash
page provided by Josh Herr.)

Welcome Reanimator
Once upon a time in Portland's North Side, just a stone's throw from the bluffs, roughly 8 punks with drum
machines, paintbrushes, amps, one dog, and a squad of reel-to-reel tape recorders all occupied a
wonderful old house. Strategy's Paul Dickow and Eats Tapes' Marijke Jorritsma occupied this joint for a
short time, but the long-timers of Red Carpet Mansion were deepest musical explorers Reanimator...the newest
group on Community Library. Off and on over the years this duo (who are also in the Load Records band,
IPCP
) have been recording their gritty, cavernous electronic rhythm music live to tape. Their new CD
Special Powers
documents the best of the tapes that narrowly made it out of New Orleans in August 2005.
A 12" sampler featuring 4 songs from the CD will drop July 17th for DJs and vinyl fans! Like all ComLib artists,
Reanimator confidently sew styles together with found/ad hoc tools and a joyous disregard for convention
to produce a highly original, iconoclastic, and strangely intimate music. The sound of pure sonic
exploration to conjure the ghosts of machine music's past.

Community Library Dee Jays and Downloadable DJ Sets
Community Library Club may be on hiatus, but the "themed" DJ sets of resident DJs Brokenwindow
(Solenoid) and P. Disco (Strategy) live on- in downloadable format. We are finally posting DJ sets! Be warned:
until we move our site onto a formal server, download rates may be slow. Inkeeping with with our label's diversity
theme, ComLib DJ sets typically combine unalike musics with strange similarities, either topical, musical, or
coincidental. DJ sets are high-quality mp3s and are offered for free. Some, but not all tracklists are posted here
- sorry for the delay as we dig thru our notebooks to find the pieces of paper we scrawled the info on....

Copies and Acronyms by DJ Brokenwindow
Two themes collide: songs about "copies/replications/duplicates" on one hand, and songs about
"acronyms" (example, IRS = Internal Revenue Service) on the other.

Skacid by DJ Brokenwindow
An historical adventure by B-window to recover lost "Skacid" tracks. Yep, that's Acid and Ska mixed into a
crucial and danceable Jamaican house style. The last known example of this species may have gone
extinct in the early 1990s.

Worldhousian Rhythms by DJ P. Disco
The first in a series of DJ sets that provide context and setting for individual Community Library releases.
Strategy's A-side "World House" is the theme- mixed with tracks that ecstatically combine african music,
techno, house, reggae, funk, disco, and more.

What Are We Trying to Do Anyways?
Sometimes, we get feedback that ComLib, however intriguing we may be, is confusing--
because we traverse so many different styles of music from one release to the next. It's true that's our M.O.!
Labels these days, including some of our favorite labels- offer a branded, distinct, highly specific 'sound'
from release to release. It's a model that helps music buyers know what to expect when they see their
favorite labels' logos in the shop. This is particularly true of the highly compartmentalized electronic/dance
music market.

But some of us get bored with predictability. Some of you expect surprises and left turns, or uncategorizable
things, or records that can draw comparisons across the boundaries of genre. Community Library brings diverse,
mixed-up music for a diverse, mixed-up world..Read our expanded mission statement to learn more about what
we think ties all these strange bands and producers together into one community of artists. To those of you who
are enjoying the surprises, we deeply appreciate your your boldness, vital curiosity, and support! Feedback
about our progress as a young label is greatly encouraged.

Next Up on Community Library...
CL10 Jefrey Leighton Brown Change Has Got To Come! CD
CL11 Project Perfect PM+ CD
CL12 Zulu & DJ C "Animal Attraction" 7"
CL13 Christmas Decorations Communal Rust CD

Evolutionary Jass Band
Evolutionary Jass Band's Change of Scene CD is making its way around the world to great
critical acclaim. Nice drops from Textura, Earplug, and independent-minded radio stations such
as KWVA, WUOG, and WFMU are moving us along. If you like Change of Scene, you'll be blown
away by the band's new album-in-progress, scheduled for approximately late fall/early winter...
In the meantime, if you're in Portland, check out the band's monthly residency at L'Astra restaurant,
every first Saturday (22 NE 7th Ave., in the Ozone building on E. Burnside.)

Omnibus+++++++

Sawako's Omnibus collage-collab project invited new participants to remix songs from the CD, and
some mixes have started to come in. New 12K label artist Jodi Cave completed a mix which is now
posted on the 12K site
. Later on as more mixes appear, we'll get a page set up for post-Omnibus
Sawako remixes.

leechaggregates
Brian from nudge has launched a wicked new DJ mix website, leechaggregates. Brian's signature
mixing style blends across genre terrain (from crunk to techno to electro-disco and beyond)
with wild abandon. Highly recommended downloads!

Eats Tapes Meets Strategy Uptown
Eats Tapes are launching a new semi-regular podcast, to be hosted at www.eatstapes.com, in which
they grill houseguests about music, art and culture, over mimosas and breakfast. When Strategy
stayed with them in May, much caffeine was ingested. Their first podcast, featuring a Strategy
interview and DJ set, posts this month.

entry for our releases. And check out happen page for some info about...

Eats Tapes
Eats Tapes are rocking a refreshed website with tons of rad graphics and info.
www.eatstapes.com. The band will be returning to Community Library later
this year for another release.

ComLib Bands All Over the Place!!

Strategy is doing gigs 4/28-5/6 in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland
and Eugene! Evolutionary Jass Band has shows in Portland and Seattle, and nudge
will be making a rare live appearance in classic trio formation, in Portland- opening up
for one of our all-time favorites, Jan Jelinek.

And Its Time for the
AGITATION PARTY for CASCADIAN INDEPENDENCE at Holocene- (more info forthcoming.)
An annual dance party to celebrate our collective excitement at the prospect of Cascadia's
separation from the shitty imperial monster dictatorship, the "united" states. Watch
this space for more info about the dance party, which will feature guerilla crowd participation
by the maverick Hand2Mouth Theatre, video by The Wizards, ORAC mainstays Caro,
and Solenoid (live), Proptronix guests Frivolous (live-Montreal) and DJ Safety Scissors,
and a potential surprise appearance from the Cascadian Knights, mystical border defenders
who travel to our present time and teach us (via techno music) about our fledgling republic's
destiny...

Solenoid "Night Beach" Temporarily Sold Out!
If you want to have a complete set of original Community Library releases, act now-
CL6 is sold out at our distributor. You can probably still find it at some of the online
shops that are forward-thinkingly stocking our titles. Solenoid's new CD/LP drops in
mid-May on ORAC. Collect them all!

Community Library Club Monthly
...Is on temporary hiatus as we refocus our DJing attention on upcoming web-only,
downloadable DJ sets. Check this space this spring and summer to listen to mp3
audio of our fun and bizarre "themed" DJ sets which are the centerpieces of our
public monthly. We may resume our night if the planets align correctly. We have
been creating the Themed DJ Sets for 3 years now, in an effort to share our
musicological oddities with the world within a conceptual framework, while also
respecting DJ culture and history.

Support for Evolutionary Jass Band and Friends

Thanks so much to Portland's respectful and engaged audiences for joining us
at Holocene April 6 for the EJB's CD release show. In spite of not having CDs
in our possession the night of the event, it was a fantastic community gathering.
Legendary local rock-scene interpretive dancer Fred Nemo arrived to assist
Valet and Tara Jane O'Neil, and the EJB gave us another tour through their
vivid re-imagined jazz soundworld. Thank you!!

In light of the success of our recent Evolutionary Jass Band
release show, we will probably throw more Community Library Happenings in
the months of Summer 2006. Stay tuned for details! Ideas going around now
include a presentation of music related film and video, Scrabble and Boggle
tournaments, and more.

21st Century Jazz
CL7, the debut CD album of the Evolutionary Jass Band, entitled Change of Scene,
will be released in the coming weeks- and we are champing at the bit for the first ship-
ment of CDs. We are having a CD release show at Holocene April 6 with fellow
travellers Valet (aka Honey from nudge, World, Jackie-O-Motherfucker) and Tara Jane
O'Neil (Portland's renaissance woman and accomplished solo artist), as well as resident
ComLib DJ's Brokenwindow and P.Disco keeping you up-to-date on music during set
breaks. The EJB's recent sets (and new studio recordings) are truly phenomenal- don't
miss this show!

Release and Artist Info Now Available
Brush aside the Dreamweaver programming-dust and you might notice that entries are
now posted for each release in our catalog and for each artist in our roster. Yay!
More big props to our design man Charcoal Jar. Website updates forthcoming in
the next few weeks:
*audio examples of music from each release.
*downloadable DJ sets from ComLib DJs!

Solenoid 12" Review and Strategy Q&A
Textura has posted commentary on the new Solenoid 12" on ComLib as well as an
in-depth interview with chief librarian, Strategy.

Sawako Interview and Concerts in Japan

Rare Frequency has posted an in-depth interview with Sawako, super soundgirl of
ComLib, and/OAR, and 12K. For our fans in New York and Japan- check out the
happen page for a listing of her March appearances in Tokyo, Kyoto, and more.

Welcome Solenoid

Actually Solenoid has been in the Community Library for quite some time, as a
founding resident DJ of our monthly club night (as DJ Brokenwindow), and as super duper
knowledge base for day to day label operations as well. Community Library is proud
to announce the release of CL6, "Night Beach" b/w "Sam Clam's Disco" 12" single
February 12th! This is Solenoid's first release in two years, and its the teaser for his
forthcoming CD/LP, Supernature, scheduled for April release on ORAC. These two
epic 12" sides span across techno, electro, and house, with velocity and an ornate level of
detail...and in the ComLib untradition, they are vigorous exercises in maximalism and joyous
disregard for category.

Evolutionary Jass Band

Late March/early April, 2006 will see the release of CL7, Evolutionary Jass Band Change of
Scene
CD.This is the debut album of this fantastic sextet from Portland. Under the direction of
band-leader Jefrey Brown, the group brings beauty, force, and a grounded work ethic to Portland's
experimental and improvisation scenes. The band's reference points include post-Impulse!
balladry, 1970s DIY soul-jazz crossovers, and Ethiopian funk melodicism, which they deliver
with great aplomb- balancing compositional contemplations with passionate out-jazz excursions.

Community Library Club
We've had a venue change, somewhat sudden; we've left Berbati and joined our promoter,
Blackbird Presents, at a lovely westside club called Towne Lounge. For now we're occupying First
Fridays around happy hour. We may eventually/occasionally curate some live bands in this happening,
but for the moment we're doing the happy hour slot, keeping the flame of themed DJ sets
alive.

Forthcoming:
*downloadable DJ sets from Community Library dee jays
*detailed content about artists and releases, including audio excerpts, artwork close-ups, etc.
*mp3 format releases of all available titles
*mailing list sign-up accessible from this site.
