Portland’s hometown heroes Atole join Community Library with their 7” single debut, “Strike Zone.” This single is a perfect slice of Atole’s intense and wonderful contradiction: tightly wound uptempo synth punk subverted by founder Manny Reyes’ spazzified bilingual exclamations. The band has been having tremendous momentum as Portland sound/scene/dance makers, and this single is a perfect snapshot of their live intensity and future direction. This release comes in anticipation of a full length album on fellow traveler label Audio Dregs. We’ve seen Atole evolve through many formats and costumes and collaborators to the definitive ‘band’ lineup on this 7”. Reyes’ life partner Tim Ferrell plays on synths and laptop, Marius Libman (aka Copy) playing bass guitar, and the inspirational energy of Mike Conroy on drums.

Atole began mysteriously in Las Vegas as a tape release and sound art solo project, later relocating to Portland. Founder Manny Reyes could be seen at the first Atole shows surrounded by a small audience -- the lone gay mexican electronic performance artist in Portland’s experimental margins, crooning his heart out for lost lovers in his own cryptic Spanglish. For each performance, he’d prepared a new 8-track backing soundtrack, played through four, synchronized cdrs in a surround-sound boombox configuration. If you were a witness to one of these special shows, you might have been one of the four volunteers who were simultaneously cued to press ‘play’ for one of the cdrs. Community Library first considered putting out some kind of dvd document of these shows, but we missed out. Fortunately, we get to capture them now in all their full-band glory.

Atole were just voted one of the Best New Bands by over 200 local musicians, DJs and tastemakers in the Willamette Week. Atole along with E*rock throw Portland’s longest running danceparty dedicated to local dance music, Supernature - described as “cutting edge” by XLR8R Magazine!
