SAWAKO

knitted headphones by Grace Kim.

Sawako (aka Sawako Kato) is a music, sound, and video artist, one of the first artists
to join Community Library. Since we first heard from her in 2001, quintessential
soundgirl Sawako has been innovating in experimental music in her native
Tokyo, and in her current home base of New York City (where she attended NYU's
prestigious ITP media arts program), and abroad where she has performed
at a variety of festivals and sound events. She has released music with and/OAR,
12K, and others, and prior to this she has a long history in the mp3/CDR under-
ground. Incorporating field recordings, processed and unprocessed voice and
instrument recordings, and computer-generated sound and video, Sawako's sound-
collages show her tremendous range of expression as well as her intuitive approach,
letting everyday life leak into her music- or be her music.. Her Community Library release,
Omnibus
, is credited to "Sawako+", in that she has incorporated the sounds of her
far-flung friends- sonic letters from her worldwide, underground sound-art network.
